19 July 2019 – Heidi Alexander,deputy mayor for transport

“I’ve asked TfL officers to accelerate their work to expand the Santander scheme further into Southwark, so that when we get this fantastic new cycleway built from Tower Bridge to Greenwich, further along that route you can get Santander docked bikes, because I know that is an aspiration that Southwark has.”

25 May 2016 – Mayors Question Time

Caroline Pidgeon MBE AM:

“… Not only is the lack of a bridge a barrier to cycling in that area but also the lack of a cycle hire scheme. I am not sure if you are aware that the most eastward cycle hire docking station south of the river is just a few hundred metres from here at City Hall. Despite Rotherhithe and Bermondsey being a really flat area, it has been excluded from the scheme to date. Will you, therefore, commit not only to deliver this Rotherhithe to Canary Wharf bridge but also to extend the cycle hire scheme out to Rotherhithe by the end of your four-year term?

Sadiq Khan (Mayor of London):

“We are looking, Chairman, at how we extend the cycle hire scheme and that will, clearly, include areas not previously covered.”

Caroline Pidgeon MBE AM:

“There is a huge anomaly. If you look at the map of the cycle hire scheme, this huge swathe of southeast London just is not part of it. If you—”

Sadiq Khan (Mayor of London):

“There are lots of anomalies in that cycle hire scheme. We are going to explore them.”

Caroline Pidgeon MBE AM:

“f you are going to build this bridge, which it sounds like you are committed to doing if you can, will you also consider extending the cyclehire scheme out to Bermondsey and Rotherhithe?

Sadiq Khan (Mayor of London):

“I do not see any reason why we should not.”

Southwark Council Cabinet Meeting – 15 March 2016

Resolved to “Extend the cycle hire scheme to Rotherhithe”
The motion was unanimously agreed by Labour, Liberal Democrat and Conservative councillors

Boris dampens hopes of cycle hire in SE16 – 24 April 2015

Question from Valerie Shawcross (Chair of the Transport Committee at the London Assembly):

“I have been contacted by residents in Rotherhithe who are keen to see the cycle hire scheme expanded on Rotherhithe peninsula particularly near the riverfront as there currently are no cycle hire facilities in this vicinity. Please can this be considered?”

Response from Boris Johnson:

“As explained in MQ 2014 /3442, there are no plans to expand the scheme outside of the current footprint at this time. The main focus for the Cycle Hire scheme, at present, is to identify locations for more ‘intensification’ sites with our borough partners within the existing footprint of the scheme.”

Editors comment: This is conflict with what the Mayors cycling commissioner said the previous month! Boris Johnson has a track record of trashing initiatives in our area – eg the previous attempt in 2008 to build a bridge between Rotherhithe and Canary Wharf.  Wonder why?  Very disappointing.  Hoping the new Mayor will be more open to reason.

London Assembly Transport Committee – 18 March 2015

Following a question from Caroline Pidgeon MBE AM (Chair):

Andrew Gilligan (Mayor’s Cycling Commissioner): “There is going to be some incremental expansion… I am talking to Southwark about expanding into Southwark because that is one bit of the inner city that is not very well covered at the moment.”

Bermondsey and Rotherhithe Community Council – 28 January 2015

Cllr Mark Williams: There was a council commitment to extend the cycle hire scheme and TfL had been lobbied about that. The council had offered to match fund expansion on capital costs but as yet TfL have not agreed. As each new large development comes forward in Southwark we are trying to get the developer to pay for cycle hire docking stations as part of those.

Southwark Council Assembly – 21 January 2015

At last Wednesday’s Council meeting, Cllr. Peter John and Cllr. Barrie Hargrove spoke about cycling provision in the Borough and extending the scheme to include Rotherhithe, Bermondsey, Camberwell and Peckham.  Cllr John confirmed the Council are prepared to support expansion financially should it be needed.

Southwark to investigate cycle hire expansion to SE16 – 5 June 2013

“Southwark Council is to spend £15,000 to investigate the possibility of extending the Barclays Cycle Hire scheme beyond its current coverage area in the north-west of the borough.”
